Modern Foreign Languages
MFL Curriculum Intent, Implementation and Impact
At St Theresa's Catholic Primary School, we recognise the importance of Modern Foreign Languages in society. We follow the Twinkl French Scheme alongside full coverage of the National Curriculum.
Intent
At St Theresa's Primary School, we intend to create opportunities for our children to develop the love and respect of languages based around the four key elements to becoming a linguist: reading fluently, write imaginatively, speak confidently and understanding culture. Throughout their time in Key Stage 2, we strive to give our children the skills and passion for languages that may inspire them to consider careers or further education in languages!
At bSt Theresa's Primary School, in conjunction with the Twinkl Scheme and the aims of the National Curriculum, our Modern Foreign Language teaching offers opportunities for children to:
• Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
• Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
• Write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
• Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
The Twinkl French Scheme is followed, alongside the National Curriculum, which provides structure and skill development for Modern Foreign Languages.
At St Theresa's Primary School:
- Children are taught French from Year 3 to Year 6 in 30 minute weekly sessions.
We ensure that the Modern Foreign Language curriculum we provide will give our children the confidence and motivation to continue to further develop their skills into the next stage of their education and life experiences, as well as provide them with skills to communicate with others and understand different cultures.
Statement of Implementation
Teachers create a positive attitude to Modern Foreign Language learning within their classrooms and reinforce an expectation that all children are capable of achieving high standards. Our implementation of the Twinkl French Scheme involves the following;
- French is planned and taught discreetly and follows the Twinkl French Scheme.
- We build upon the learning and skill development of the previous years. As the children’s knowledge and understanding increases, and they become more proficient and confident with reading fluently, writing imaginatively, speaking confidently and understanding culture.
- Teachers demonstrate how to pronounce vocabulary in order to embed understanding.
Statement of Impact
The successful approach at St Theresa's Catholic Primary School results in a fun, engaging, high-quality Modern Foreign Language education, which provides children with the foundations for understanding the world. Children are able to access the curriculum through a variety of activities, including singing, speaking, listening, matching vocabulary to pictures and writing. Pupil voice is used to further develop the Modern Foreign Languages curriculum, through questioning of pupil’s views and attitudes to Modern Foreign Languages to support the children’s enjoyment and to motivate learners.
